Schulek Staircase

The Schulek Staircase forms a grand limestone spine connecting the Danube embankment to the Fisherman's Bastion. It is characterized by a series of wide, sweeping terraces and double-flight stairs that narrow as they ascend the Castle Hill. Built at the start of the twentieth century, the structure takes its name from Frigyes Schulek, the architect who also oversaw the restoration of the nearby Matthias Church. He designed this staircase to draw city dwellers up into the castle district with deliberate elegance.
