Irgalmasok Veli Bej Bath

The Veli Bej Bath displays a low, ochre-colored dome that sits tucked between taller, modern hospital buildings. This structure functions as the oldest Turkish-era bathhouse in Budapest, built in fifteen seventy-four by the Ottoman governor Veli Bej. While conquerors often leveled the structures of their predecessors, Veli Bej built his bath directly over the natural thermal springs used by the Romans centuries earlier. Beneath that dome, octagonal pools remain fed by the same water that once served the Ottoman garrison.
