Gül Baba Street

Gül Baba Street winds upward toward the Buda Castle district, distinguished by its narrow, uneven cobblestones and walls that press tightly against the sidewalk. The street takes its name from a sixteenth-century dervish and poet who arrived in Buda with the Ottoman army. He died here just days after the city fell in fifteen forty-one. Legend says he collapsed right where he was leading prayers, and Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent acted as one of the pallbearers at his funeral procession.
