Liberty Square features a massive, white Soviet war memorial anchored by a golden star, which sits in stark contrast to the surrounding ornate nineteenth century mansions. While the square hosts a bronze statue of Ronald Reagan striding toward the embassy, the Soviet monument remains in its original position despite years of heated public debate about its removal. Hungarian workers built the square in eighteen eighty-six over the ruins of a notorious Austrian military prison where many leaders of the eighteen forty-eight revolution died.
