The Phönix-ház on József körút wears a facade of golden yellow brick, topped by a distinctive, jagged roofline that mimics the feathers of a mythical bird. Built in nineteen oh two, the building served as a headquarters for the Phönix Life Insurance Company. When the architect Aladár Kármán designed it, he filled the structure with organic, flowing lines inspired by Hungarian Secessionist style. In nineteen fifty-six, a Soviet tank shell tore through the building's corner, leaving a scar that residents refused to repair.
