The General Post Office in Chennai displays a striking facade of red brick and white plaster, designed in the Indo-Saracenic style with its signature high domes and arches. Completed in eighteen eighty-four, this building replaced a smaller office to manage the city's growing imperial mail needs. Robert Chisholm designed the structure, integrating Mughal-inspired features with Victorian engineering. A fierce cyclone damaged the main dome in nineteen thirty-three, leaving the building exposed until repairs restored the prominent silhouette that defines the skyline today.
