Great Gate

The Great Gate, or Darwaza-i-Rauza, marks the entrance to the Taj Mahal complex with a massive archway of red sandstone inlaid with white marble. Its design serves to frame the tomb, forcing visitors to transition from the noisy bazaar into the serene gardens beyond. When the gate was finished in sixteen forty-eight, it functioned as a grand threshold for travelers arriving from the dusty plains of Agra. It stands as a heavy, deliberate boundary between the everyday world and the mausoleum itself.
