Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal sits on the banks of the Yamuna River, identifiable by its massive central dome flanked by four slender minarets, all clad in white marble. Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned this mausoleum in sixteen thirty-two to house the remains of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Legend says he intended to build a matching black marble structure for himself across the water, but his son deposed him before it began. He spent his final years watching this white marble tomb from his prison window.
