Hohei-kan stands out for its bright cerulean blue wooden siding and white trim, a vivid contrast to the surrounding greenery of Nakajima Park. Built in eighteen eighty as a Western-style hotel for dignitaries visiting Sapporo, it famously hosted the Meiji Emperor during his northern inspection tour in eighteen eighty-one. The structure was moved from its original city center site to this park in nineteen fifty-eight, preserving the grand chandeliers and ornate plaster ceilings that once impressed visiting imperial officials.
