Hojo Garden （南禅寺方丈庭院）

The Hojo Garden at Nanzenji features a stark expanse of white raked gravel punctuated by several large, moss-covered stones arranged in groups. These rocks are meant to represent a tiger leading cubs across a river, a scene known as the leaping tiger garden. Kobori Enshu designed this space during the early seventeenth century for the temple's main hall. He used the surrounding mountains as a backdrop to create a sense of deep, expansive landscape within a walled courtyard.
