Yasaka Kōshin-dō Temple

Bright, multicolored fabric balls hang from the eaves of the Yasaka Koshin-do temple, swaying in the wind. These small pouches represent kukurizaru, or bound monkeys, which symbolize the restraint of human desires. By tying these offerings to the temple, worshippers hope to have one of their wishes granted, provided they are willing to give up one personal bad habit. A statue of the Blue-faced Vajra, or Shomen Kongo, guards the inner sanctum, watching over those who come to seek his help.
