A stone monument stands in Komeyacho, marking the former site of the Tsukiji of the Kyoto City Hall. This land served as the administrative center during the Edo period when it functioned as the Kyoto Magistrate's Office. Officials governed the city from behind these walls, overseeing everything from legal disputes to public order. In eighteen sixty-eight, the office transitioned into the Kyoto Prefectural Government, making this the birthplace of the modern local administration that still governs the city today.
