The store Kyukyodo occupies a narrow, wood-fronted shop in Kyoto, marked by a simple wooden sign with black ink calligraphy. Founded in sixteen sixty-three, this merchant business began as a supplier of medicine to the Imperial Court. When the capital moved to Tokyo in eighteen sixty-nine, the owners followed the emperor, but they kept this original location running in Kyoto. To this day, the shop shelves carry the same incense and traditional stationery that once served the needs of the imperial household.
