The stone torii gate standing at the entrance to Sugawara-in Tenmangu Shrine marks the site where the scholar Sugawara no Michizane was born in the ninth century. This small neighborhood shrine occupies the grounds of the former residence of the Sugawara family. A stone well remains in the courtyard, said to be the very one used by Michizane as a child for his calligraphy practice. People still visit to pray for success in their studies and to seek his scholarly favor.
