Smart Coffee occupies a street-level space marked by a simple, classic storefront with a dark wooden frame and a long, glowing sign in cursive script. It opened in nineteen thirty-two as a high-end coffee shop during a time when Kyoto residents were still growing accustomed to Western-style cafes. The owner, Hitoshi Nishida, kept the interior furniture largely unchanged for decades, preserving the original curved wooden booths and the heavy, solid counter where customers order the shop’s signature egg sandwiches.
