Former site of Choshu clan office

A single stone monument stands at the corner of Ichinofunairicho, marking the site where the Choshu clan once operated a fortified office. During the final, volatile years of the Tokugawa shogunate, this building served as a secret base for samurai plotting to overthrow the government. In eighteen sixty-two, the clan leader Katsura Kogoro used this location to harbor political dissidents fleeing pursuit. The office burned to the ground during the Kinmon Incident of eighteen sixty-four, leaving only the land behind.
