Takase River Boat Landing

The Takase River Boat Landing is a small stone-walled basin tucked into the modern streetscape, marked by a lone, reinstalled flat-bottomed boat sitting in the water. For three centuries, this basin served as the primary port for boats carrying rice, salt, and lumber into Kyoto. In sixteen eleven, a wealthy merchant named Suminokura Ryoi dug the entire canal by hand to connect the city to the port of Fushimi. He died the same year the first boats arrived here to unload their cargo.
