The Ikedaya inn marks the site where the course of the Tokugawa shogunate changed in one night. It features a modern stone monument and a plaque indicating where the Ikedaya served as a gathering point for anti-shogunate samurai in eighteen sixty-four. The Shinsengumi police force raided the inn after hearing reports of a plan to set fire to Kyoto and kidnap the emperor. Swords clashed in the small, multi-story building, leaving several samurai dead and signaling the end of an era.
