Kyoto-style Climbing Kiln (Fujihira Climbing Kiln)

The Fujihira climbing kiln climbs the steep hillside in a series of six stepped, vaulted chambers built of scorched brick and tile. Designed to mimic the natural draft of a chimney, the fire travels from the lowest chamber to the top, carrying heat and ash across the pottery stacked inside. When the kiln was active, potters stoked the flames around the clock for days, turning raw clay into Kyoto’s famous glazed stoneware through sheer persistence and heat.
