Kawai Kanjiro's House

The wooden gate at the entrance to this compound sits flush against the narrow lane, distinguished by the rough, dark timber and a simple, sturdy aesthetic that contrasts with the refined homes nearby. This house served as the home and workshop for Kawai Kanjiro, a central figure in the Japanese folk craft movement. He built the structure in nineteen thirty-seven, incorporating a traditional climbing kiln into the rear garden. He lived here until his death in nineteen sixty-six, surrounded by his own handmade ceramics.
