A massive, egg-shaped stone monument covered in hundreds of slips of paper dominates the courtyard of Yasui Kompiragū Shrine. This slab, known as the Enkiri-enmusubi hi, serves as a gateway for visitors who crawl through its narrow slit to sever bad luck and invite new connections. Local lore centers on Emperor Sutoku, who retired here in the twelfth century to study and pray. People visit today to replicate his devotion, hoping to snap their ties to illness, addictions, or troublesome relationships.
