Tenjuan

The wooden gate at Tenjuan features a distinctive weathered texture and a simple, austere design that marks the entrance to this sub-temple of Nanzenji. Established in the fourteenth century, the site honors the Zen master Kanzan Egen. While many travelers pass by, the temple remains a sanctuary for those seeking silence. The grounds contain a pond garden split into two distinct styles, reflecting the transition from classical aesthetics to the spare, gravel-based arrangements that defined the Muromachi period for later generations of monks.
