Ninomaru Garden

The Ninomaru Garden features massive, carefully arranged boulders positioned to appear as if they are floating in the pond. Designed by the landscape architect Kobori Enshu in the seventeenth century, the garden serves as the formal foreground to the Tokugawa Shogunate's palace. When the shogun arrived from Edo, he walked through these structured pathways to display his authority. The stones remain precisely where they were placed to project a sense of eternal permanence, even as the political power they once represented shifted away.
