The Canal Cafe features a long, wooden deck that hangs directly over the green water of the outer moat of the former Edo Castle. Originally established in nineteen eighteen as a private rowing club for the employees of the Tokyo-Kobe Railway, it served as a place for the staff to exercise and socialize on the water. Today, the rowing club legacy remains through the small fleet of rental boats moored alongside the cafe tables, bobbing against the edge of the embankment.
