Kiyomizu Kannon-dō Temple

The Kiyomizu Kannon-dō Temple features a distinctive, protruding wooden stage that cantilevers over the hillside of Ueno Park. Modeled after the famous temple in Kyoto, this structure was built in sixteen thirty-one to house a sacred statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The monk Tenkai designed the building to mirror the geography of its western inspiration, complete with a stone lantern donated by a feudal lord. Couples often visited here during the Edo period to pray for children while gazing at the Moon Pine.
