The Ananda Temple features four massive, gilded Buddha statues facing the cardinal directions, each standing thirty-one feet tall. King Kyansittha built this structure in eleven oh five, designing it as a perfect cross-shaped floor plan. According to local legend, the king asked eight traveling monks to describe the legendary cave dwelling where they lived in the Himalayas. After they finished, the king had this temple built to recreate that mountain sanctuary, eventually executing the architect to ensure the design would never be replicated.
