That Bin Nyu Temple rises two hundred feet above the plains of Bagan, crowned by a massive, tiered structure that distinguishes it from the smaller shrines nearby. King Alaungsithu commissioned the temple in the twelfth century, intending to build a monument that surpassed all existing ones in height. During the decade of its construction, the workers struggled to balance the immense weight of the upper terraces. Legend holds that the architects solved the problem by burying massive stone anchors deep within the walls.
