Maha Bodhi Phaya

religious

The Maha Bodhi Phaya stands out with a pyramid shaped tower covered in hundreds of niches, each holding a seated Buddha figure. This temple is a direct replica of the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India, where the Buddha attained enlightenment. King Htilominlo commissioned this structure in the early thirteenth century to cement his connection to the holy sites of India. The thick, weathered brickwork displays a distinct Indian architectural influence, rarely seen among the many bell shaped pagodas scattered across these plains.
