The Hu Qing Yu Tang pharmacy features dark, heavy wooden pillars and intricate, hand-carved latticework that sets it apart from the surrounding modern streets. Hu Xueyan, a prominent merchant during the Qing Dynasty, built this complex to house his medicine business. He insisted on the highest quality herbs and rigorous standards, famously placing a tablet on the wall that promised fair prices. His influence grew so large that he supplied medicine to the imperial court during the late nineteenth century.
