Mirador del Lavadero

historic

The Mirador del Lavadero is defined by its stone basin and the sharp, rectangular cut it makes into the neighborhood wall. This space served as a public laundry site where women from the Realejo district gathered daily for generations. The water channel running through the basin connected directly to the uphill Acequia del Ave, providing a constant flow. One woman reportedly kept her washboard here for forty years, claiming the specific temperature of the mountain run-off whitened linens better than any modern soap.
