Bridge Le Pont de Carouge

The stone bridge spanning the Arve River at Carouge features three distinct, sturdy arches and provides the primary gateway between Geneva and the Sardinian-style town of Carouge. Its masonry dates back to eighteen eleven, commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to replace a failing wooden structure. When the bridge opened, soldiers demanded tolls from every traveler crossing into the city. A local merchant named Jean-Pierre once tried to sneak his produce past the guardhouse by hiding sacks of flour underneath his carriage floorboards.
