The Carouge market square features a gravel expanse framed by rows of low, Mediterranean-style buildings with ochre facades and shuttered windows. King Victor Amadeus the third of Sardinia commissioned this town in the late eighteenth century, hoping to create a commercial rival to Geneva. He hired architects from Turin to design a grid of streets centered on this open plaza. Merchants set up stalls here twice a week, continuing a tradition of trade that dates back to the town's founding by royal decree.
