Rue Saint-Victor features narrow, low-slung houses with pastel-colored shutters that look nothing like the typical gray stone of central Geneva. King Victor Amadeus the Third of Sardinia commissioned this street in the seventeen eighties to lure foreign artisans and merchants with promises of religious freedom and tax breaks. Master craftsmen built their workshops right on the ground floor, keeping their living quarters tucked away above. The stone archways still bear the faint marks of the original iron hinges used for heavy wooden doors.
