Edirnekapı

The Edirnekapı gate features a wide, stone-arched opening that interrupts the massive Theodosian Walls of Constantinople. It served as the city’s ceremonial entrance for Byzantine emperors returning from military campaigns. In fourteen fifty-three, Sultan Mehmed the Second rode through this specific gate to claim the city for the Ottoman Empire. For centuries, the stonework bore the marks of sieges and earthquakes, yet it remained the main land passage into the historic peninsula for travelers arriving from the western provinces of Rumeli.
