Duke of York, Bloomsbury

The Duke of York is a rare survivor of the interwar period, completed in nineteen thirty-eight as part of a larger residential and office development known as Mytre House. While many London pubs underwent significant renovations during the late twentieth century that stripped away their historical character, this site remains a remarkably intact example of nineteen thirties Art Deco design. Its architect, Denis Edmund Harrington, designed the building with clean lines and stylized features, including striking exterior pylons that depict sculpted female figures. When you look at the building, you are seeing a deliberate, unified architectural vision that has avoided the typical modernization of most neighborhood pubs.
