Saint George's Gardens

Saint George's Gardens holds the distinction of being one of the first burial grounds in London established entirely away from the church it served. When it opened in 1714, the site sat in the middle of open fields far to the north of the city center. Two different parishes shared the land, which was originally divided down the middle by a wall to keep their respective burials separate. You can still see the remnants of this boundary today, marked by a line of broken headstones that runs across the landscape.
