Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst Memorial

The bronze statue of Emmeline Pankhurst depicts the suffragette leader with her arms outstretched, capturing the exact, impassioned gesture she used when addressing the crowds who gathered to hear her speak. Unveiled in 1930, the memorial was commissioned by the very women she led, and at its opening ceremony, the Metropolitan Police Band performed the anthem of the suffrage movement. The band was composed of officers, some of whom had personally arrested those same suffragettes during the militant demonstrations that rocked the city just years prior.
