Suffragette Memorial

The Suffragette Memorial in Christchurch Gardens takes the form of an uncurling scroll shaped like the letter S. Commissioned by the Suffragette Fellowship, this sculpture was unveiled on July 14, 1970, which would have been the one hundred and twelfth birthday of the prominent suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst. Several women who had actively participated in the suffrage struggle attended the unveiling ceremony, including Lilian Lenton, a militant campaigner who had endured hunger strikes and force-feeding during her time in prison. The sculpture itself is made of fiberglass and finished in cold-cast bronze to honor those who risked violence and ostracism to secure the vote.
