Edward Irving served as a popular preacher in the early nineteenth century and drew thousands to his sermons with a style that blended prophetic intensity with intellectual rigor. He founded the Catholic Apostolic Church which departed from mainstream denominations by emphasizing the restoration of spiritual gifts like speaking in tongues. His radical views eventually led to his expulsion from the Church of Scotland and he lost his position at his London chapel as a result.
