Ye Olde Mitre

Ye Olde Mitre is tucked away down a narrow alleyway connecting Hatton Garden to Ely Place. You might walk right past the entrance without realizing a historic tavern sits just a few steps away. The building traces its origins back to fifteen forty-six, when it was constructed to house the servants of the Bishop of Ely. Because the land was originally part of the Bishop of Ely’s palace estate, which was headquartered in Cambridgeshire, the pub was technically considered part of that county for centuries. This unique status meant that for the longest time, licensees had to travel all the way to Cambridge to obtain their operating permits.
