Benjamin Pollock's Toy Shop is a direct link to the nineteenth-century world of juvenile drama. During the Victorian era, these miniature paper theatres were a widespread craze, allowing children to perform their own versions of popular stage plays at home using printed cardboard characters and scenery. Benjamin Pollock was the most famous publisher of these theatrical sheets, which he sold from his shop in Hoxton for the iconic price of a penny plain and twopence coloured.
