Duchess Theatre

The Duchess Theatre sits on a site that was once a gaping scar from a first world war Zeppelin raid. When architect Ewen Barr designed the venue in the late nineteen twenties, he faced a severe legal hurdle known as the Ancient Lights law, which prohibited any new structure from blocking sunlight to existing neighboring buildings. He solved this by keeping the upper floors set back and burying the stalls entirely below street level. This unconventional decision not only satisfied the law but created the intimate, subterranean atmosphere that still characterizes the auditorium today.
