Islington Studios

Islington Studios, also known as Gainsborough Studios, began its life not as a place for cinema, but as a power station for the Great Northern and City Railway. Its conversion in the early twentieth century transformed this industrial building into a powerhouse of a different kind. For decades, the site served as the primary base for Gainsborough Pictures, earning it the nickname Hollywood by the Canal. The studio became a vital incubator for early British film, hosting some of the most important directors and actors of the era during its operation between nineteen nineteen and nineteen forty-nine.
