All Souls Church, Langham Place

You are standing before All Souls Church, a building designed by the famous architect John Nash and completed in eighteen twenty-four. Its most striking feature is the circular, colonnaded entrance hall that stands at an unusual angle to the rest of the building. Nash included this specific shape to solve a tricky urban planning problem. As he laid out the route for Regent Street, he encountered a sharp bend where the road met the existing Portland Place. He used this church to anchor that intersection, turning a logistical hurdle into a dramatic architectural landmark.
