On a quiet morning in May 1952, Eastcastle Street became the site of the largest postwar robbery in British history. Seven masked men executed a precision heist on a Post Office mail van, forcing it to a halt by sandwiching it between two getaway cars. The robbers moved with such efficiency that they disabled the van’s internal alarm system and overpowered the three crew members in a matter of seconds. By the time witnesses in nearby buildings alerted the authorities, the perpetrators had vanished with nearly three hundred thousand pounds in cash and valuables. The event shocked the public and drew personal interest from Winston Churchill, who demanded daily updates on the investigation.
