The Dominion Theatre stands on ground that holds a much darker and more liquid history than its elegant art deco facade suggests. Before the theater was built in nineteen twenty-eight, this site was occupied by the Horse Shoe Brewery. In eighteen fourteen, a massive wooden vat inside the brewery burst, releasing over three hundred thousand gallons of fermenting porter in a wave that surged into the streets. This event became known as the London Beer Flood, a disaster that tragically claimed the lives of eight people in the neighborhood.
