Kingsway Tram Tunnel

The Kingsway Tram Tunnel stands as a relic of a time when London was divided by class. In the early twentieth century, the wealthy residents of central London successfully lobbied against the presence of trams on their streets, viewing them as a working-class mode of transport that did not belong in affluent districts. To bridge the gap between their isolated northern and southern tram networks, the London County Council took the tramway underground. They built this subterranean passage beneath a grand new boulevard called Kingsway, which had been carved directly through a demolished slum.
