Battlebridge Basin

Battlebridge Basin owes its existence to a clever piece of land development from the early nineteenth century. In eighteen fifteen, a local landowner named William Horsefall struck a deal with the canal company during the construction of the nearby Islington Tunnel. He allowed the company to dump the massive piles of excavated earth on his property, which he then used to raise the ground level around a newly dug basin. This created a raised waterfront that sat above the surrounding street level, providing a perfect, elevated site for industrial warehouses.
