Caroline Chisholm Blue Plaque

The blue plaque you see here honors Caroline Chisholm, a woman known as the emigrant's friend for her tireless humanitarian work during the nineteenth century. While living at this house, then numbered 3 Charlton Crescent, she operated the headquarters for the Family Colonisation Loan Society. This organization provided a lifeline to struggling families by lending them half the cost of their travel fare to Australia, with the expectation that the loan would be repaid once they were established in their new home.
