St John's Gate stands today as the sole surviving medieval monastic gateway in London. Completed in fifteen hundred and four, it served as the formal southern entrance to the grand priory of the Knights Hospitaller. These knights were a powerful crusading order that operated this ten acre site like a bustling, self-sufficient town, complete with a brewery, a fishing pond, and its own water supply. Continue
